There are a few different ways you can easily change the case of your text in LibreOffice Writer. You can also use a keyboard shortcut to toggle between UPPERCASE, lowercase and Sentence case.

When you change text to SMALL CAPITALS, you are formatting the characters (see below). Anything you go on to type will also be in small capitals. To get rid of small capitals, highlight your text the choose Format, Text, Small Capitals again, to knock it off. (Or highlight your text and press Ctrl + Shift + K).

Or… Use Format Character

  1. Alternatively, go to Format on the menu bar, and choose Character. Format Character
  2. The Character dialogue box will open. Font Dialogue Box
  3. Click on the Font Effects tab. Font Effects Tab
  4. In the Effects section, click on the drop-down arrow next to Case and choose an option. Choose option
  5. Your text will be previewed in the preview box underneath. Text is previewed
  6. When you are happy with it, click OK. Click OK

NOTE – When you apply formatting to your text using the Format, Character method and then continue typing right after, the new text you type is formatted with the case you chose in the Effect drop-down list on the Character dialogue box. However, when you use the Format, Text, Change Case method, any text you type right after that goes back to normal text.

Using a Keyboard Shortcut to Change Case in Writer

Highlight all the text you want to change. Hold down the Shift key and press F3. Depending on what case your text starts in, the text toggles from sentence case (first-letter uppercase and the rest lowercase), to all uppercase (all capital letters), and then all lowercase (all lowercase letters).

Note – if your text does not have a full stop at the end of it, Shift & F3 will toggle to capitalise each word instead of using sentence case.
